The Avila Eagles shook off any rust from a holiday break by hosting the 2024 Avila Duals on Saturday, January 6th. The Eagles first action on the new calendar year saw them host Oklahoma Wesleyan, Dakota Wesleyan and Central Missouri at the Mabee Fieldhouse.
The duals offered the chance for family & friends to attend while students are still away on holiday break. Gavin Howes, a Junior who competes at 285, enjoyed having family members on site supporting the Eagles. Jerome Howes, Gavin’s father, came to Kansas City all the way from their home in Pueblo, Colorado. Howes says “I try to go to all the home events”. For this specific event Howes traveled via a train which took him to Kansas City’s Union Station. Taking an Amtrak isn’t the only way Howes has traveled to cheer on his son this season. Howes admits to “Driving other times”. The Howes family has plans to bring several family members to regionals in February. In addition to Gavin’s father & mother all four of his uncles are planning to be there.
In December Daryus Webb was named KCAC Wrestler of the week. The Senior from St. Louis ended his holiday break going 3-0 in the Avila Duals. Webb had several friends in the stands cheering him on to success. Webb who competes at 184 felt the first post holiday action was important “Pretty important, sets a tone for the second half”….
