14U Greco Missouri Overcomes Tough Competition to Claim Fourth at National Wrestling Duals

Westfield, IN – Coming into day two and entering the “Gold and Silver” Championship Pool, Missouri faced three traditionally strong states. In their opening round, Missouri matched up with Indiana and found little struggle as they gathered their Greco and advanced with a 46-20 victory.

Round two, however, posed a much different problem as Missouri faced their neighbors to the northwest in Team Washington. Always a great rivalry, and certainly always a great dual, the dual could not have been any more exciting for fans, and easily a positive push in momentum for Missouri.

With the dual opening at 87 pounds, Farynn Rhees took to the mat for Missouri and got the dual rolling with a 10-4 decision. With her win, Missouri took a 3-0 lead in the team score. Washington, however, answered with a series of victories, but Missouri fought back valiantly.

Zolah Williams (90) won by fall in just 41 seconds, putting Missouri back in contention. At 97 pounds, Zainab Albadri continued the momentum with a technical fall, followed by Addison Foster at 102 pounds, despite a tough match ending in a fall. The team score remained tight, but Missouri led with significant wins by Ariel Biggs (115) and Jauzlyean Gray (121) who dominated their matches with technical falls.

From 127 pounds through 163, Missouri showcased their depth with Erin Delling and Kamryn Bourbon securing technical falls, but Washington’s strength showed as they picked up crucial wins. Despite a valiant effort from Missouri’s Temprence Watson at 183 pounds, Washington held on to their lead and ultimately won the dual 42-28.

Heading into the final bout of the dual, Missouri was trailing but kept their spirits high. For Missouri, they sent Kennedy Grass, knowing she needed to secure a dominant win. Unfortunately, despite her best efforts, Missouri fell short, setting the stage for a battle against Oklahoma.

In a dramatic and closely contested match, Missouri faced Oklahoma with everything on the line. Highlights included dominant performances by Lilith Williams and Ariel Biggs, who both secured technical falls. In a thrilling conclusion, Missouri edged out Oklahoma 39-37, showcasing their resilience and determination.

Now, as they headed into their final match for third place, Missouri faced a tough California team. Where Missouri was able to keep Washington from scoring too many shutouts and scoring shutouts of their own, this was not the case against the girls from the Golden State.

In a dual that would be lost 38-25, Missouri was shut out on team points in six matches. With one of those losses being by fall, that left missed opportunities in five matches where points could have been gained. Of course, it is much easier said than done, but with a two-point difference, there is no doubt many thoughts went to where three of those points could have been made up—being scoring during a loss, or not conceding a point in a win. Either way, Missouri would now head to the third-place dual and face California.

For third, Missouri took control of the matchup with a strong string of wins before a back-and-forth affair between the two states took place. In the end, Missouri was simply too much and won the dual, 40-27, securing a third-place finish.

With their showing, Missouri must believe that a Fargo title in Junior Greco is a very realistic possibility when the time comes—and the country is aware of that possibility as well. Best of luck, girls.
