The Lindenwood men's wrestling team will host the 2nd annual Joe Parisi Open this Saturday. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. with competition taking place in both Hyland Arena and Evans Commons on Lindenwood's campus.
The competition is expected to be larger and deeper than last year's tournament with representatives from many of the top schools in all divisions from across the nation. The event consists of programs from NCAA Division I and II, NAIA, and NJCAA. Of the 26 schools competing, 14 are ranked in the top 20 nationally in their respective divisions. From the NCAA Division I level, three teams are ranked in the top 10, including No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 6 Illinois, and No. 7 Missouri. Also expected to compete are over 85 individuals that are nationally ranked, including a number of returning All-Americans and National Champions.
Lindenwood is one of six NCAA Division II teams. Of those six schools, two are ranked in the top 15 in No. 9 Ouachita Baptist and No. 15 Maryville.
The tournament is named after the former Lindenwood men's wrestling head coach. Parisi coached the Lions for 11 years and led the program to five NAIA National Championships, two NAIA runner-up finishes, three NAIA National Duals Championships, and two NAIA National Duals second-place finishes. He coached 123 NAIA All-Americans, 31 NAIA National Champions, and was a five-time NAIA National Coach of the Year.
